5th International MAAR Conference

2ndCircular-MAAR2014-version5The Local Organizing Committee and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of Earth´s Interior (IAVCEI) will be pleased to welcome you to the 5th International Maar Conference in Querétaro (México) between the 17th (Monday) and 24th (Saturday) of November, 2014. The Conference will have 4 days of themed oral and poster sessions, several keynote lectures and an intra-meeting field trip (Nov 20th). The proposed sessions for the conference cover a wide spectrum of very interesting topics that range from physical volcanology and field relations, petrology, and geophysics of maar-diatreme systems and other monogenetic volcanoes to experimental

work and modeling on phreatomagmatic explosions, passing through environmental, cultural and economic aspects related with maar-diatreme systems and monogenetic volcanoes.
Mexico’s geodiversity makes it a unique natural laboratory where volcanism of different ages and styles is widely exposed along the country. In addition to the large stratovolcanoes that characterize the landscape of the central part of Mexico, large monogenetic volcanic fields, mainly formed by clusters of scoria cones, maars, lava
domes, and extensive lava fields, are common in the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB), an active subductionrelated arc. TMVB monogenetic fields are dominated by basaltic andesites, but some, such as the Serdán Oriental and Valle de Santiago fields, display a broad spectrum in lava compositions from mafic alkalic to rhyolitic. The most
famous example of a monogenetic eruption in Mexico is that of Parícutin, which occurred from 1943 to 1952, within one of the largest dominantly monogenetic volcanic fields worldwide, the Michoacán-Guanajuato volcanic field,
